He's been doing a series of these for awhile now for different causes, and they've been getting pretty big and quite successful. This evening was no exception and I was really content to be surrounded by such a loving conscious community so quickly after the love fest that Burning Man can be. I played on the ground level stage with a couple of folky friends Myriam Parent and Joanna Chapman-Smith. I really enjoyed playing that night, it was one of my favorites of all-time so far. The upstairs stage had Theta and friends, and the back porch had Pepe Danza and friends. Tvi had the idea that for this event he would give all the proceeds to the artists for them to decide how much and who they wish to support. I decided to support Living Oceans - check out what they do: http://www.livingoceans.org/ So it was an all-round fun evening and again I didn't get to bed until 4am and had to get up to teach a 9am yoga class. But I had plenty of energy and inspiration for class, and kept channelling good vibes. Napped in the afternoon!

Saturday the Man was Alight and We Danced Some More

It's incredible how quickly time passes. I've been back from this epic experience for what is it a week and a half? The fleetingness of our experiences makes them incredibly beautiful and tinged with a little sorrow for we're always saying goodbye while we trying to say hello to right now. This photo was from a few hours before the burn on Saturday. I had spent the day happily recovering from dancing to way-too-much-dubstep all night until sunrise and ventured out later into the afternoon's dust storm to practice yoga in deep playa. I spent the burn with my dear friend Shana and her lovely crew from SF and LA. We were all pretty joyfully happy like children watching the man burn down, it was exciting! One of the bestest things about BM is the wonderfully high quality folks you meet. It really attracts many kind, open, and beautiful people. So since I've been back I've been busy planting the seed amongst the many friends here who would dig the crap out of burning man :) and especially the theme for next year 'Rites of Passage'. This is a very timely and apt theme - I am pretty darn excited the transformation within ourselves and within our cultures. So we have a few ideas and much will have to do with the healing and transformational power of music. And with regard, since I've been home I have already been back in studio for three days, played a benefit gig for our Rivers and Oceans, and started discussing the future of our folk-blues circus show of Siddhartha. I have definitely returned from Black Rock City inspired to pursue my greatest pleasures ... and music has been great too ;)

'By the Ton' at Burning Man

I love playing at Burning Man. Last year the way people's hearts were open to the music inspired me to really pursue my path as a musician. This year I came back with the album I began to pour myself into immediately after the Burn 2009. It was rewarding to give the album back to Playa and play the old songs and the new songs all week. Friday was my big gigging day. The night before I had passed out from exhaustion in my friend's living room dome structure - they tried to wake me before going out but I wouldn't budge, I subsequently woke up entirely confused, "Where am I? I'm at a festival...Burning Man....Nevada?" Then I saw the note Shana and Ben left me...I still have it. So I wobbled home on my bike and woke up barely in time to play at Centre Camp Stage at 8am. My voice was raspy so everything had a slight Ray LaMontagne vibe to it. I made a bold request for a Latte when I started my show and a somewhat boisterous man said he would - I nearly regretted asking - and asked whether I wanted a "grande mocha frappe fag-o-cino?" "Wow," I said taken aback along with everyone else, wondering whether to laugh or be offended, "I'll have whatever you're having mate, thanks" I said and began my first song of the day. It was a lovely show, Robin Layne came on stage for my second song and played cajon and shakers. Later that morning I played at By the Ton on the esplanade - it was the place with the huge meditating iron man and the folks responsible for the large iron flowers with rolling flames at night. Gibbon set up a sweet warm sound for me and I played non-stop for over two hours. After the show, my camp buddy Melanie and I chased after the water truck wetting the playa for a drive-by shower - I almost managed to whip my pants off while jumping in the air! Then it was off to Reverbia and, later, an evening show at Dust Fish. Lord Huckleberry welcomed me very warmly to the latter venue, requesting to see my bottom as I was loading the stage - I obliged the old gent making a monkey's ass of myself in the most gracious of manners and played my final show at Burning Man. That evening it would be my turn to enjoy the raving and dancing to the loudest soundsystems on the planet 'til the sun rose over the playa...

Academy of Rogue Therapists

One of the most impressive things about Burning Man is the Gift Economy. Nobody sells anything at the Burn, everything is gifted - the only exceptions are the cafe at centre camp and the ice stations. So people's camps will gift food, drinks, entertainment, courses, anything they want. Our camp was called the Academy of Rogue Therapists - for some reason people kept hearing "rope therapists" and were surprised to find out our gift was something as tame as setting up art stations for people. Berm and Ali were the masterminds of this lovely themed camp and Berm built some trailers to carry our supplies behind our bikes. This was my contribution to our Gallery when we set up a station at the GSpot Bar (not sure why they were called that, I just got a beer).

Double Rainbow at Burning Man

During the storm on that first day at Burning Man I was enjoying myself immensely. It was ridiculously crazy, the wind threatened to blow away tents and I was helping secure tent poles with ropes as they pulled and thrashed against my grip. The rain was turning everything into a muddy nightmare and I was soaked attempting to cover our women's tent with a massive tarp. I was shivering and laughing at the unruly play of the elements. And just as soon as it had started it stopped and we were rewarded with the double rainbow and beams of light landing upon the playa like crystal shafts. Of course, everywhere could be heard the question "What does it mean?" and the answer was definitely something like "You crazy mofos are blessed!"

Burning Man 2010

Again, Burning Man has given me an entire lifetime experience in 7 days that I am still processing and seeing when I close my eyes. We arrived last Monday after sleeping a couple hours before dawn before making the final push to Black Rock City in northwest Nevada. You won't see the city on the map but I was there and there were 54,000 of us in this Metropolis of peace, love, good beats, and art of all sorts and all scales. Just as soon as we had arrived at our camp at the cross streets of 6 o'clock & F the wind picked up quite ferociously and it began a freak rain storm. Very weird in the desert...and it passed and we were treated to a double rainbow - the most vivid I have ever seen. After that it was all sun and blue skies until the weekend. During the first part of the week I was out playing shows each day at several stages - Reverbia, By the Ton, DustFish, and Centre Camp. Some I had set up prior to arriving but the middle two I made new friends with. This photo shows my ride around the concentric circle shaped layout that is Black Rock City. The bike is a goldfish created in reverence to my, um...
more to come...

Chris Murdoch and Isis

From the Siddhartha show, this guy is Chris Murdoch and a great contact juggler. Isis was a tantalizing Kamala with her hybrid of bellydance and other sorts of sensuousness. Chris as Siddhartha brings back the riches required to be a friend and lover of the lovely courtesan, and is no longer a dusty Samana in nothing but a loin cloth. See, Siddhartha looks quite sharp here and Kamala is impressed. Siddhartha is now a citizen of Samsara and after a number of years becomes a bit of a playboy and gambler... see what women make you do ;) actually she was his truest of friends and yeah, she was worth sticking around in Babylon for awhile...
photo: Diane Smithers

Siddhartha at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen

The Storytyme Collective had their first show at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Gardens last Friday. We presented our adaptation Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse through an inter-weaving of music, circus and dance. The setting of the gardens gave us a magical and living world to tell this beautiful story that ultimately leads to the wisdom and wonder of being in tune with nature. We have been asked to do another showing at the gardens but the Collective is leaning towards mid-November for our next showing and Vancouver weather will not likely permit a very dry telling of this show outside! I will introduce you properly to the whole collective....when I'm back from Burning Man, which I should be packing for actually... Oh and the new album is shaping up very nicely. I was recording earlier this week and having a blast with all the nice sounds we can capture at Profile studios - one block away from my home! I was camped with the Spoken Word family and would wake up every morning to the sounds of children and music playing in our shadey living room. I'd get up early even though I'd stay up until 5am every night, and I'd practice yoga and jam with my new family over coffee. Then I'd set out with my guitar over my shoulder to wander the paths and play the gigs that Doug had arranged for me at Front Porch, Spirit Tower, Energy Park and, most exciting of all, at Main Stage for Saturday's midnight show. (I will be getting a sweet video of the performance soon!)

Throughout the fair were hand-made and US-made crafts of all sorts - leatherwork, carnival masks, organic clothes, pottery, musical furniture, geez anything you could imagine - and the food here was off the hook! But to be honest I couldn't eat as much as would have liked because it was so incredibly hot and I was running mostly on the positive energy of this place. There are a ton of hippies here, but also a lot of families, kids and young adults. The performances ranged from bluegrass to hip hop, reggae to gypsy music, circus to spoken word, and many folks busk on the side of the paths that wind through the fair. Every evening at 7pm the fair closes and a marching band sweeps through, but the volunteers, performers, and crafters stay on to party until the early morning.

Each night around 1pm I would make my way to the Ritz, a beautiful open air sauna where everyone is naked and some band plays in front of a large fire pit. In the actual sauna people sing together anything from old hymnals, to the Beatles, to favorite hippy singalongs. Going to this place every night is probably what allowed me to function on so little sleep! I am in withdrawal I must say, I loved the fair and the people there way more than I had expected and am excited to go back next year and the next and the next!

For those who donated at the Energy Park Show:

Thank you! If it's after a show and they are sharing their experience of my songs, I feel we are both enriched. Something intentional or maybe not (we have our own perceptions) in my music has affected them, and their speaking to me let's me know that they have received a gift. And this is the gift I receive, to know that what I doing in this world is positively affecting a fellow being. Why else would we be here? And of course I just like talking to people, I do it as much as I can in Vancouver. I find that people if given half a chance will connect, and this we need more of in this in this beloved city.
photo by Pher, a new friend I met while busking on English Bay

the Stairwell Album

There is nothing like the real reverb of an old stairwell. I can't help but sing in a good one. This weekend Rosalee took me to the incredible Dominion building on the corner of Hastings & Cambie. I do believe I was taken over, by a bunch of globe spirits or somtehing. There is soul in this building there is no doubt of that and I felt my fingers and voice possessed - in a good way. I am going to record a video album all done in such spirited stairwells throughout Vancouver. We will start this month, March 2010. Coming to a stairwell near you, at 3 in the morning - that would be me.

Devli's In you

This is the first or twenty songs I'm considering for a new album or follow-up ep to Latest Waking.

Finishing Album - Feeling Giddy - Sping Fete Accompli

I have been having a lot of fun I have to admit, everyday for the past month I have been finishing this album. My first full length, I guess I never really believed how much it takes! Now I know that to do this can be a journey into a whole world of sound...ok, a small world of sound (10 songs worth), and perhaps only small lake on a small world in a universe of sound! But this has been my world and I have mostly loved all of it - I have been spared with only one or two panics of doubt :) But I have had some great encouragement from friends and collaborating musicians. I am very grateful for them all and am excited about all we can now do with each other in the future.

The CD release is going to be wicked fun. A spring fete - indeed a SPRING FETE ACCOMPLI - haha. MARCH 6th. A bit of a fair, with artists, a big handful of great performers, food, wine, chai, no expense spared to celebrate the earth - in fact a benefit for a local non-profit ecojustice - and of course everyone goes home with the album printed on recycled cereal boxes and cds made of bottlecaps...for real, I will make totally recycled album packages if people want to have a smaller footprint - just a little but your feet will look cuter a bit smaller...

...you do have the option of an actual CD if you like them of course!

Cheeper early bird tickets for sale Monday morning early, like noon.

The last morning of Burning Man

Hallelujah... from azooosa on Vimeo.

This was just sent to me by Azusa. It was the last morning of Burning Man 5am or so (Sept 9th?), after playing my last show on the stage, I huddled with some new friends - Azusa, Radhika, Tigger and a few others - and played a few more tunes including Jeff Buckley's rendition of Cohen's Hallelujah. I can feel the tingling coming back into my hands, just as the ground warms as the sunlight expands. At last the shame of folly slips into the past, and by mid-morning the nights shadows will no longer cast. I'm ready to live and love again. It's not quite a choir of angels bringing in the morn, it's more a settling of demons tired out from their scorn. What a vibe it has! Sunday night was the Burning Man Decompression Party - funny, since if you haven't decompressed a month after the festival you'd be better moving into the wilderness or a commune somewhere! I suspect it's just an excuse to party - and apparently the san fran folks throw a party at the opening of a letter :) Meghan, ever willing for adventure, came down ahead of me and met the Jugtown Pirates who we played with Monday night. They made me realize that bluegrass without grit is just boring, I love these guys! They do want to pirate Meghan though, hahaha - well, I'm going to pirate Zack on double bass! The bookstores, my god, so many to peruse...you can feel the beat and bohemian roots of this city still pulsing. There are plenty of places to play in this city, too. One of the most interesting places I have ever played at was at an open stage at the corner of 16th and Mission. People gather around every Thursday to listen to spoken word and music performed without amplification, and without too much organization. It's a joyous free for all, where the homeless people are just as entertained as the hippies!
I could live in san francisco for sure.

Lugz, Vancouver

Last night, I was blessed with a warm room full of new and old friends to showcase my full band for the first time. I almost can't explain to you how important this night was for me. Firstly, John Craigie came into town to open for me and I always love his stories and hanging out with that brother. To have the hard-work rehearsing all summer with the different members of the group result in a wonderful sounding quartet was really fun. And finally to receive all the love back from the audience in my home town was so nourishing, I have been longing for a chance to give and receive in equal measure with Vancouver.

Back from the Burn

Awww! Friends and new friends sometimes meditating, sometimes dancing, listening deeply, I grateful and flowing. One of the new friends invited me down to Burning Man, offering me a ticket and an opportunity to play at Entheon stage Tuesday and Thursday night. Originally I wasn't going to go as I had a wedding in Rhode Island I was going to, but the idea kept growing in my mind and eventually I just felt I had to go...that was yesterday actually. So it's Tuesday now, and I have found a ride and am heading down to play music and experience the wonder that is Burning Man. So excited!

The Mandala project at Roberts Creek

Roberts Creek is just a short ways from Gibsons and every year they have this huge communal mandala project. I love her and so does all of us in RLM and the Chai community!

For more on Vi An...

Show in Gibsons

Last weekend we went to Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast in a large entourage to play music at an art opening at Raquel Fors' gallery. I will post some more pictures and some live recordings soon. Not only did Red Light Monastery and Bucky Coe play, but we were joined by new members Ben Brown on drums, Meg Engel on viola, and Vi An on the ancient Chinese Guzheng (pronounced Gu-Jung or just Jung). The show was for the opening of some incredible art and the party was "epic" (not my words :) ). I am definitely going back up to Gibsons for more music and other adventures...apparently there are dreadnecks, pirates, elves, and fairies all up the coast!

Below you find details of the studio where we played and its lovely owner Raquel who, besides being a talented photographic artist, hosts all sorts of really cool events:

The Jordao PhotoGraphic Studio Gallery
Located at #2-626 Shaw Rd.
Gibsons, BC
Opened January 30 2009

Owner and Operator Raquel J. He's the real deal in terms of travelling folk musician. Wonderful friend and excellent musician.

Also playing with us that evening was Joanna Chapman-Smith, a local folkster whom I used to play when I last lived in Vancouver 4 years ago. Her music is beautiful and unique, look out for her new album!

Shaden Garett, Sean Fultone, and myself enjoyed our second gig as a trio. We're naming this collaborative project for the solo work of Garett and I "12 Midnights." First of all I'm on the Big Island in Hawaii, if that's not enough! Today, though, I was fixing up an old cruiser I got for free at my parent's Self-Storage business and got to talking to Leon - a down to earth Maori guy who stores all his music stuff there. We were chatting about music, paying dues, his gang past & getting past all that, and guitars etc... He turns out to be LT Smooth, a Hawaiian/Maori multi-instrumental phenomenon nominated for four grammy's at this years awards.
