This was just sent to me by Azusa. It was the last morning of Burning Man 5am or so (Sept 9th?), after playing my last show on the stage, I huddled with some new friends - Azusa, Radhika, Tigger and a few others - and played a few more tunes including Jeff Buckley's rendition of Cohen's Hallelujah. I just watched this and was taken back to that lovely morning, thanks Azusa!
Saturday downtown Vancouver, we sent a message to our governments that we demand climate action to get our civilization off the path to ecological ruin, and to have justice between the developed and developing nations...videos to follow
It felt a lot like spring today and so I played the love song I wrote earlier this year when I was feeling ridiculously romantic about someone...and it almost worked out :)
I dust my hat off and tip it to the rising sun, my thirsting in the desert I feel is nearly done. By now sweet mercy I must have paid my debt, spent my time in this purgatory of regret. I'm ready to live and love again. I can feel the tingling coming back into my hands, just as the ground warms as the sunlight expands. At last the shame of folly slips into the past, and by mid-morning the nights shadows will no longer cast. I'm ready to live and love again. It's not quite a choir of angels bringing in the morn, it's more a settling of demons tired out from their scorn. I see the dew drops forming on the green leaves, it's all alright now we all need our time to grieve. I'm ready to live and love again!
I am in love with this city. What a vibe it has! Sunday night was the Burning Man Decompression Party - funny, since if you haven't decompressed a month after the festival you'd be better moving into the wilderness or a commune somewhere! I suspect it's just an excuse to party - and apparently the san fran folks throw a party at the opening of a letter :) Meghan, ever willing for adventure, came down ahead of me and met the Jugtown Pirates who we played with Monday night. They made me realize that bluegrass without grit is just boring, I love these guys! They do want to pirate Meghan though, hahaha - well, I'm going to pirate Zack on double bass! The bookstores, my god, so many to peruse...you can feel the beat and bohemian roots of this city still pulsing. There are plenty of places to play in this city, too. One of the most interesting places I have ever played at was at an open stage at the corner of 16th and Mission. People gather around every Thursday to listen to spoken word and music performed without amplification, and without too much organization. It's a joyous free for all, where the homeless people are just as entertained as the hippies! I could live in san francisco for sure.
Last night, I was blessed with a warm room full of new and old friends to showcase my full band for the first time. I almost can't explain to you how important this night was for me. Firstly, John Craigie came into town to open for me and I always love his stories and hanging out with that brother. To have the hard-work rehearsing all summer with the different members of the group result in a wonderful sounding quartet was really fun. And finally to receive all the love back from the audience in my home town was so nourishing, I have been longing for a chance to give and receive in equal measure with Vancouver.
Awww! I want to be back in Black Rock City! Burning Man was everything I had hoped it would be and more. Meghan Engel - my viola player - and I played shows everyday. The desert environment was harsh and beautiful. I fell in love. I made so many great friends and contacts, and will be touring down the coast very soon. I am on the path of the musical shaman. My gift to this world is the pouring my soul into my singing and guitar, and more than ever make this offering to the world.
Last week I was playing at Chai at the end of the night, it was a small intimate crowd. Friends and new friends sometimes meditating, sometimes dancing, listening deeply, I grateful and flowing. One of the new friends invited me down to Burning Man, offering me a ticket and an opportunity to play at Entheon stage Tuesday and Thursday night. Originally I wasn't going to go as I had a wedding in Rhode Island I was going to, but the idea kept growing in my mind and eventually I just felt I had to go...that was yesterday actually. So it's Tuesday now, and I have found a ride and am heading down to play music and experience the wonder that is Burning Man. So excited!
Roberts Creek is just a short ways from Gibsons and every year they have this huge communal mandala project. The day after the show the entourage visited the mandala and soaked in the Sun, the community, and the nearby beach. Raquel, Monkey (who videod the weekend), and I stayed there all afternoon painting. Well, Monkey mostly just passed out, but Raquel and I played with brushes and paint.
Vi An came with us to the trip to Gibsons last minute, we had met her a couple weeks previously at Chai Gallery and immediately invited her into our circle of musicians and friends. Almost everyday we would be hanging out, improvising, and performing. At the Jordao Gallery show she opened and blew people away before I played my solo set. Later on she opened for the Red Light Monastery and rejoined us for incredible improvised pieces as the party took off.
We are definitely hoping she does come back to Vancouver and leaves Calgary behind her. I love her and so does all of us in RLM and the Chai community!
Last weekend we went to Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast in a large entourage to play music at an art opening at Raquel Fors' gallery. I will post some more pictures and some live recordings soon. Not only did Red Light Monastery and Bucky Coe play, but we were joined by new members Ben Brown on drums, Meg Engel on viola, and Vi An on the ancient Chinese Guzheng (pronounced Gu-Jung or just Jung). The show was for the opening of some incredible art and the party was "epic" (not my words :) ). I am definitely going back up to Gibsons for more music and other adventures...apparently there are dreadnecks, pirates, elves, and fairies all up the coast!
Below you find details of the studio where we played and its lovely owner Raquel who, besides being a talented photographic artist, hosts all sorts of really cool events:

Featured artists: Juan Carlos Fernandez and Federico Mendez Castro from Venezuela. Both Students of the Inside Passage School of Fine Woodworking.
Juan Carlos creates optical illusions of his work that seem like three to four pieces in one, as well as awe inspiring cabinets.
Federico Mendez, through an fertility theme, brings the beauty out of a variety of woods, creating counter balanced pieces that are engaging and alterable.
I am recording my second album right now - perhaps as you're reading this. Admitedly it has taken me awhile but I am really excited to be capturing this my best collection of work for all of eternity. Well at least until the end of days - which should be happening any day now according to the horde of old lady doomsdayers hanging out on my corner. I will have my most up-to-date demos for most of the album on all of my sites, I hope that you enjoy watching the music develop. much love, bucky
